The Gates Notes – The Omniprocessor: Turning Waste into Water with Bill Gates
While working with Bill Gates’s private office, Branson wore just about every creative hat—Executive Creative Director, Director, Designer, Art Director—you name it. One of the most game-changing projects during that time? The Omniprocessor.
Designed by Janicki Bioenergy, this machine does something that sounds almost impossible—it turns human waste into clean drinking water and electricity. And yes, it actually works. He filmed the entire process, from raw sewage hitting the conveyor belt to Bill Gates himself taking a sip of the purified water at the other end.
The challenge? Making this groundbreaking science crystal clear. Branson and team designed simple, engaging graphics to break down how the Omniprocessor works—so that anyone watching could grasp its significance. And it worked. The video racked up 3.8 million views in three weeks and became one of the most talked-about pieces on The Gates Notes.
The reach didn’t stop there. The film was later featured in Davis Guggenheim’s Netflix documentary on Bill Gates (Part 2)—an unexpected but incredible bonus for a project that wasn’t just about storytelling, but about solving one of the world’s biggest sanitation challenges.
Some projects win awards, some change the world. It did both.
